Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: I’m thinking of hiring a publicist for my play or art event. How soon in advance do I need to start the process?
A: The latest I can possibly start work on a project is 4-6 weeks before the event. It’s a good idea to start the process as early as possible, because my schedule is often booked up months in advance.
Q: Can you guarantee media coverage?
A: I can’t. But I have yet to have done publicity for a show that did not garner some media coverage.
Q: Will you distribute our posters and postcards for us?
A: I will happily consult with you about your marketing materials. In fact, I encourage it so that your event has a solid, across-the-board branding. I do not, however, design or print posters or postcards, or distribute them. I mostly deal with the media.
Q: Do you have people that you work with that you recommend?
A: Yes. There are people that I have worked with personally, who I think are really great, and I would recommend their work. For example, for graphic and web design, I recommend Janet Baxter. For photography, I recommend Pink Monkey Studios.
Q: What do you need to know to get started?
A: Here are the questions I ask every client (or potential client) before I start working with them:
- What are your production dates and venue? What is your overall marketing budget? (including publicity, advertising and marketing materials)
- Do you have publicity pictures? You will need interesting, arresting photographs that also say something about your play. Ideally, they should be shot in colour, as they can be digitally transformed into B&W if needed, and there should be one portrait and one landscape, high res.
- Do you have a graphic designer? Do you have ideas for the marketing materials?
- Do you have a website?
- Do you have an established presence on social media? (blog, Facebook, Twitter)
- What makes your play unique?
- What are its main selling points?
- Do you have a plan for ticketing? (pricing, how to get tickets)
